Step Forward to End Global Poverty

As our global community is faced with a great deal of challenges, we are presented with an opportunity to make a difference.

Join Spirit of Math Schools as we step forward to end global poverty at the World Partnership Walk in support of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC).  Last year, under the leadership of team captain Qaahir Rahemtulla from the Spirit of Math Thornhill campus, our team raised more than $$11,375 for the AKFC, an organization dedicated to social, economic, and cultural development in 30 countries across the globe.

Our campaign was recognized by the Canadian Government, who matched our fundraising efforts, resulting in a $22,750 contribution to the cause

About the Aga Khan Foundation
Established in 1980, AKFC is a registered Canadian charity and an agency of the worldwide Aga Khan Development Network, a group of development agencies with individual mandates that address social, economic and cultural dimensions of development. Active in 30 countries, these agencies share a mission to improve living conditions and opportunities for the poor, without regard to their faith, origin or gender.

Global Development in Working
While efforts to fight global poverty are seeing results, there is much more work to be done. According to the 2015 United Nations Millennium Development Goals Report and the 2016 Untied Nations Sustainable Development Goals, 1-billion people have been lifted from poverty over the past 20 years, while mortality rates of children under 5 have decreased more than 50 per-cent since 1990.

Still, 836-million people around the world still live in abject poverty and 16,000 children under 5 die every day.

While global poverty continues to be an issue, global development initiatives are working, which means we must keep up the fight. Our interconnectedness presents us with a fantastic opportunity to accelerate human development and to be a positive force of change in our global community by investing time, resources and knowledge in smart development solutions that help alleviate poverty and improve the quality of life for communities in some of the poorest regions in the world.

The World Partnership Walk is just one way Canadians can use their global citizenship be a force of positive change worldwide!
