Are we AI Ready?

Never send a human to do a machine's job.

- Agent Smith, The Matrix (1999)

Artificial intelligence and automation technology is an unstoppable force that is quickly transforming our world.

Amy Burroughs, Managing Editor of EdTech Magazine, sat down with Joseph Qualls, an AI expert and founder of a research and development company that uses AI to solve problems for the United States military and industry to share his thoughts on how AI will change the way we provide healthcare, entertain ourselves, and teach our college students, among other things.

According to Qualls, AI will become a facet of our society faster than we think and will change the way we educate our young minds using personalized education plans.

“I tell people that AI is a wave, and it’s here now. You are either going to surf that wave or it’s going to crash on you. It’s not going to be 10 years from now — it’s today,” Qualls tells EdTech Magazine. “You will have a student interact with an AI system that will understand him or her and provide an educational path for that particular student. Once you have a personalized education system, education will become much faster and more enriching. You may have a student who can do calculus in the sixth grade because AI realized he had a mathematical sense. That personalized education is going to change everything.”

While the rise of AI – to an alarmist at least - paints a picture of a dystopian future in which man is sent to the unemployment lines by machines, there’s hope. We can prepare our children, and the future face of our workforce for what’s to come. But the time is now.

While the way we work, play, and innovate is always changing, one thing will remain constant: the need for skilled minds in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). As driver-less cars take over our streets, they’ll need gifted workers with skills in problem-solving, logical thinking, and teamwork to design, program and build them.

Programs like Spirit of Math Schools take a hands-on approach to show kids how science and math concepts relate to the ever-changing world around them. By sparking genuine interest and keeping youth passionate about STEM in their lives, we’ll ensure our youth are ready for the artificial intelligence “wave.”
