Spirit of Math Student Reviews Experience at World Mathematical Olympiad in Seoul

By Ryan D.

Grade 5 Spirit of Math Student

It was the best day of my life.

This summer I went to Seoul, South Korea because I got invited by the head of Spirit of Math, the after-school math class that I go to, to compete in the World Mathematical Olympiad (WMO) 2016 World Final competition. I was invited because I did my best last year, got great marks on all my competitions, and I am one of the best students in my math class. I was one of five kids from Canada who had this lucky experience.

The teams at the WMO Finals were Canada, UK, Korea, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia.

My favourite moment of the competition was when I was just about to do the individual competition (a one and a half hour written math exam). I had an excited and nervous feeling, I had butterflies in my tummy. Once I started the exam I felt happy and confident because I was really prepared for the competition. Over the summer I studied math and tried my best and practiced exams. I even learned some algebra before I went to Seoul.

My favourite team event was “Untangle” on the iPad. It was a game where you had to swipe the screen to untangle the different 3D shapes as quickly as possible. Team Canada completed the event to get a sticker on our badges. This event made me feel great because my Team Canada teammate and I finished 3 levels and we only had to complete one level to get the sticker. We worked well together at this game because we had great communication.

Hard work pays off because I got to go to Seoul, South Korea. The best part was I made some new friends from Canada and around the world!

Spirit of Math Schools (SoM) will once again be Releasing the Genius at the 2017 World Mathematical Olympiad in Beijing, China on August 12.

In preparation for the 2017 competition, SoM will be undergoing a comprehensive selection process to determine who will represent Team Canada in Beijing. Two teams will be formed with a total of 12 team members, 6 students per team.

The selection process for Team Canada will consist of an average score from two preliminary rounds, with the top 10% invited to write the WMO National Canadian Finals at Spirit of Math head offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Ottawa.

Contest dates are as follows:

  • Preliminary round #1: April 28th at 5 p.m.
  • Preliminary round #2: May 5th at 5 p.m.
  • WMO National Canadian Finals: May 12th at 5 p.m.

Those representing Team Canada will be given additional contest training in preparation for the Beijing competition. More details on this selection process and the event will follow throughout April.

Not all campuses will be able to accommodate these contests, however we have several locations across the country that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis due to capacity constraints. To enter Spirit of Math’s WMO selection process, please register online with your preferred location before April 27.
